Fall 2024 Rule Changes

September 5, 2024, 7:34 pm

There are a few new rules that will take effect starting Fall 2024.

1) The board approved a rule change that follows a new rule adopted by the NCAA allowing doubles when setting. The NCAA language and rationale are as follows:

On a team’s second hit, contacting the ball more than once with any part of the body in a single attempt to play the ball is not a fault if the ball is next contacted by a teammate. However, if the ball is played over the net, it would be considered a fault and the opposing team would be awarded a point.

2) A reminder that we changed the ball selection process. If the teams cannot agree on a ball to use for the match, a coin toss will decide who chooses the ball. The ref will do the coin toss if one is present; if no ref then a captain will do the coin toss.

3) We will no longer be sending refunds for matches that do not have a ref. The number of matches without refs has increased because of the ref shortage; and the increasing number of refunds has made budgeting more difficult and added to the work of our (volunteer) Treasurer. To account for not sending refunds, we did not raise the price of fall season over the price from last winter (a comparable season length) despite other increasing costs since last year. Of course we will continue to send refunds if matches are cancelled due to weather or a gym cancellation.
